Many independant music videos focus a lot on symbolism instead of telling a narrative like Newton Faulkner's Dream Catch Me in which there is the implied narrative of him and he girl breaking up. This is shown through the photo frames behind Faulkner which connote memories of the past and the shots of the girl enforces this. However, these close up slow motion shots of the girl are quite mainstream so it seems mainstream is hard to avoid.
Faulkner is also dressed as an independant artist with the beard, dreadlocks and neutral coloured, simple clothes.
Another thing independant music videos do is show the artist a lot and usually playing an instrument like in Dream Catch Me however in Ed Sheeran's early videos he only appears for a few seconds at the beginning or at the end like in the A Team where he appears in the beginning as the only nice person (to the prostitute.) Another feature of their music videos is to have an effect which makes the video retro - black and white or sepia for example.
