16. Video and Narrative Inspirations!

Video Number 1!
One of our main video inspirations is the Thirty Seconds to Mars Video - Up In The Air.

This song is 8 minutes long and so there was always the risk that the video would bore the audience however, due to the numerous objects and people and the sheer randomness of it - the video keeps the audience entertained through out. The music video starts with the band members being introduced one by one as they go to their instruments, then, through out the video we cut to clips of the band playing to remind the audience that this is still a music video since at time the video can become like a short film. The objects, animals and people we see during the video are not necessarily related to each other or the song lyrics but it relates to the tempo of the song especially with the extreme cuts (0.55.) The slow motion and reverse shots are used effectively and the extreme close ups and bright colours create a random but entertaining mood for the song.

Many of these are features we wish to include in our video as the song we have chosen (Planetary Go! by MCR) is a fast paced song that would fit with this type of random video however, this video - even though it is sort of in the style of a short film (with credits at the end) - doesn't particularly have a narrative and we are currently wanting to include a narrative in our video even if it's just a small one because a narrative helps pull the video together so the audience is not just watching clip of random inanimate objects. From looking at the lyrics of the song we are hoping to use, a narrative may be possible, therefore our objects can relate to the narrative and the lyrics.

Video Number 2!
Another video we are taking inspiration from is the music video of Lived a Lie by You Me At Six which is very heavily performance based and since we are having our band perform in the video to promote them this provided inspiration in that section.

The video contains some really interesting transitions and a variety of shots which would be effective for our music video. The quick cuts of close ups of sections of the instruments would especially work in our video since our video will have a quick pace to it (in most sections.) The effect of having a red glow/light that appears during the rough transitions speeds up the pace of the video and makes it more interesting and is a really interesting effect which we might use during the quicker, more hectic sections of the song. The locations used in the music video are very simple but also effective and the video never gets boring.

As mentioned the shot choices in this video are good inspiration for what to use on the performance aspects of our video the edginess to them would be appropriate for our video. The location of just an empty street is also something we could look into as it is simple but with the correct lighting/effects it can be very effective.

Video Number 3!
Another video we have taken inspiration from is Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan which is one of the first music videos and has had a huge impact on music videos. This video is just one guy stood holding sheets of paper with some of the lyrics on but we feel this could be really effective in our video if we use it sparingly such as on the lyrics:

"Truth is now acceptable,
Fame is now injectable.
"

With Truth and Fame being the words written on the card/paper. This adds variety and interest to the video as well as keeping with the randomness aspect especially if we make the writing bright colours and sharp edges.

Narrative
We realised we wanted a narrative in our video because we didn't just want random objects which left no impact on the audience whereas a narrative could. We realised that our rough idea of the video would be sort of like a dream world or dream state. So, our narrative would be a boy (the lead singer of the band) putting his headphones in to listen to a song - we would the zoom into his eye and the rest of the music video would be him 'experiencing' the song and what he sees in his mind as it plays.

The narrative was partly inspired by the beginning of Vertigo just before the film actually starts after the main credits when the special effect spirals come out of the girl's eye as if they came from her mind/we were going into her mind. We realised that this would be a good way to explain to the audience that this video is in the lead singer's mind therefore making the video less random and with a narrative for the audience to follow.
