37. First Draft Editing!

Today we finished the first draft of our music video 'Her Name is Alice' and we are really pleased with it! We varied a lot with our editing and tried out different techniques such as the 'cloning' effect and we looked at different types of filters. From the feedback we got, many people were impressed but they also suggested changes which I will mention in the Feedback post. As the Director of Editing I have decided to make this video describing the editing process!

As I mentioned before, the ordering of our clips was very simple as we had an intricate storyboard to follow, however, some of our clips, especially those filmed at the field, didn't work out the way we wanted and so we used our best judgement to change it for the better.

The beginning of the song in which 'Alice' speaks involves slow motion clips of the band members walking to their instruments and an interesting reverse shot of the microphone flying up into our lead singer's hand. Between all these shots, since the music is quite slow we used the fade transition which also served the purpose of creating an introductory feel to the video. Where Alice is stood in the field holding the pack of playing cards we had to increase the brightness and the contrast as we filmed the field shots last and by that time it was getting dark and so the shots didn't fit with the rest of the clips. On all our band shots throughout the video we added a flicker effect which looked quite good in production but once rendered we received some feedback that it was quite distracting.

After the line "no such thing as time" we did a quick pan to a clock and out to Alice's body laying on the floor - in editing we started the shot as the camera was panning towards and away which gave it the quick, continuous feel.  We also use quite a few cross fades throughout the whole video in order to make the clips flow smoother and also give the video that slightly 'Wonderland' feel, for example Alice on the floor to the empty chess set and at many points throughout the tea party.

We use many slow motion shots throughout the video - especially on the chorus. The slow motion shot of the band about to throw the tea cups/plates is a good introduction to the next "Alice..(alice)" section in which we see two tea cups hit the trees in slow motion. We also use slow motion on the powder paint sections to great effect especially when Alice lets go of the paint, smashes the clock and when Abby (the drummer) hits the cymbal as this makes the song very dramatic - which the chorus is - and also promotes the bands image a bit more since this is what the video is also about. Towards the beginning there is also a slow motion shot where Alice spins slightly as rose petals fall on her which can emphasis her innocence and looks beautiful.

An editing section I was especially proud of were the chess shots which I was in control of since I knew how to do it. The chess shots involved Alice playing chess against herself and since our actress Alex didn't have a twin we had to edit it to fit. The process of 'cloning' is actually very simple. First, I took the two video tracks I needed and put one on the overlay track.

Then on the shot on the overlay track I went to Event Pan/Crop and clicked Mask. From there all I had to do was create a box around the section of the shot I wanted to keep leaving the rest of the shot black. Because this track was the overlay track it meant that it would play the remaining section of the other shot underneath it, alongside it! It sounds very complicated but in reality is quite simple and highly effective!

The music video, especially at the beginning and towards the end in the tea party shots, involves a lot of fast paced editing which works really effectively especially on some of my favourite shots where band members hold cards with words on relevant to the lyrics. These are some really effective shots because of the synchronous editing of the different shots of each person and the way it promotes the band as the star image some more.

The final editing point I want to mention is the ending where we have Alice in the field alone and then with the Mad Hatter behind her then the band behind her. However, we made these more effective in the second draft after we received some feedback.
